Hlavní náplní předmětu je obecná tématika lékařské genetiky, genetické metody vyšetřování a jejich využití v prevenci vrozených vývojových vad u člověka.

Cílem předmětu je seznámit s historií oboru genetika, s teoretickými základy genetiky, s vlivem exogenních faktorů prostředí na změny genetické informace. Objasnit význam geneticky podmíněných onemocnění ve vztahu ke zdravotnímu stavu populace.
