Předmět je koncipován jako teoretický. Studenti se seznámí se základními principy genetiky, dědičnosti na úrovni molekul, buněk a organismů s důrazem na lidskou genetiku. Součástí předmětu jsou informace o genealogických a cytologických vyšetřeních.

Cílem předmětu je seznámit s historií oboru genetika, s teoretickými základy genetiky, s vlivem exogenních faktorů prostředí na změny genetické informace. Objasnit význam geneticky podmíněných onemocnění ve vztahu ke zdravotnímu stavu populace.
